Allogeneic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (BM-MSCs), ex vivo expanded, is an investigational cell therapy developed by the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Liege (CHU de Liege) for the treatment of Crohn's disease, particularly refractory perianal lesions. These cells are harvested from healthy donors, expanded in vitro, and then administered to patients. The therapeutic potential of BM-MSCs lies in their potent immunomodulatory properties; they secrete a variety of bioactive molecules, including indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), which collectively suppress the activation and proliferation of T cells and promote the induction of regulatory T cells. In the context of Crohn's disease, these cells aim to dampen pathological mucosal inflammation and facilitate the healing of complex fistulas or refractory lesions.
