This investigational cell therapy consists of allogeneic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) developed by the Fundación Instituto de Estudios de Ciencias de la Salud de Castilla y León (ICSCYL). It is specifically designed for the treatment of chronic knee osteoarthritis. The therapy is administered via a single intra-articular injection into the knee joint. The mechanism of action involves the regenerative and immunomodulatory properties of MSCs, which are expected to promote the repair of damaged articular cartilage and reduce local inflammation. The therapy is currently being evaluated in the Phase III ARTROCELL clinical trial, which compares its efficacy and safety against autologous MSCs and hyaluronic acid.
