Overview

This investigational cell therapy consists of allogeneic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (BM-MSCs) developed and manufactured by Karolinska University Hospital. The therapy is specifically designed to treat severe viral-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), particularly in patients requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). These MSCs are characterized by the expression of surface markers CD166, CD105, CD73, CD44, and CD29, while lacking hematopoietic markers CD34, CD14, and CD45. Upon intravenous administration, the cells naturally home to the lungs where they exert immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects. Their mechanism of action involves the paracrine secretion of various anti-inflammatory cytokines and growth factors that help modulate the immune response, reduce alveolar-capillary barrier damage, and promote tissue repair in the context of acute lung injury.
