This investigational cell therapy consists of allogeneic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (BM-MSCs) developed by Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) for the treatment of pulmonary emphysema. The therapy utilizes the anti-inflammatory and tissue-repair properties of multipotent stromal cells to halt the progressive inflammatory response characteristic of emphysema, a component of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Administered intravenously, these donor-derived cells are being evaluated in patients undergoing lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) to determine their ability to modulate immune cells, such as neutrophils and monocytes, and promote alveolar regeneration through paracrine signaling and modulation of the lung microenvironment.
