Allogeneic corneal-derived adult keratocytes, ex vivo expanded, is an advanced cell therapy medicinal product (ATMP) developed by the Andalusian Network for Design and Translation of Advanced Therapies (Red Andaluza de Diseño y Traslación de Terapias Avanzadas). The therapy consists of keratocytes isolated from human donor corneas that are expanded in vitro to therapeutic quantities. Keratocytes are the specialized fibroblasts of the corneal stroma responsible for maintaining its structural integrity and transparency. This cell therapy is intended for the treatment of severe corneal pathologies, including refractory trophic ulcers, stromal thinning, and fibrosis, as well as limbal stem cell deficiency. Upon transplantation into the patient's corneal stroma, these cells are designed to integrate into the host tissue, synthesize new extracellular matrix components (primarily collagen and proteoglycans), and secrete trophic factors that promote tissue regeneration and restore corneal transparency.
