Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cells are multipotent cells used in transplantation to treat various hematologic malignancies, including acute myeloid leukemia (AML). In the specific protocol developed by the University of Leipzig and the East German Study Group for Hematology and Oncology (OSHO), these cells are administered to elderly patients (aged 60-75) following a reduced-intensity conditioning (RIC) regimen. The RIC typically consists of fludarabine and low-dose total body irradiation (TBI). The primary therapeutic mechanism is the graft-versus-leukemia (GvL) effect, where donor-derived immune cells recognize and destroy residual leukemic cells in the recipient, complemented by the restoration of normal hematopoiesis.
