This is an investigational cell-based therapy consisting of allogeneic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) developed by the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins. The therapy was designed to exploit the innate tropism of MSCs for inflammatory tumor microenvironments, with the goal of using them as a delivery vehicle for therapeutic agents in prostate cancer. In a Phase I clinical trial (NCT01983709), the cells were harvested from healthy donors, expanded ex vivo by the Johns Hopkins Cell Therapy Laboratory, and systemically infused into patients with localized prostate cancer prior to radical prostatectomy. Although the infusions were found to be safe with no dose-limiting toxicities, the study was terminated early because the MSCs failed to accumulate at the primary tumor sites in detectable levels.
