Allogeneic human mesenchymal stem cells (allo-hMSCs) are a biologic cell therapy being investigated for the treatment of comorbid Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). This specific application, pioneered by Dr. Ihsan M. Salloum at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, is based on the hypothesis that chronic inflammation is a key driver of treatment resistance and symptom severity in patients with both conditions. The therapy involves a single intravenous infusion of 100 million allogeneic MSCs, which are intended to exert potent anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects. By reducing systemic and neuro-inflammation, the treatment aims to improve clinical outcomes in this difficult-to-treat population. The Phase I/II ALAUNUS trial evaluated the safety and efficacy of this approach.
