Allogeneic induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes + stromal cells (often referred to as Engineered Heart Muscle or EHM) is a tissue-engineered therapeutic product developed by Universitaetsmedizin Goettingen. It consists of allogeneic iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes and stromal cells (typically fibroblasts) embedded in a bovine collagen-based matrix to form a functional muscle patch. The product is designed for epicardial implantation in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Its mechanism of action involves the physical remuscularization of the failing myocardium, where the implanted cells integrate and contribute to contractile force, alongside the secretion of paracrine factors that promote angiogenesis, reduce fibrosis, and support endogenous tissue repair.
