Allogeneic islet cells (University of Alberta) is an experimental cell therapy consisting of isolated pancreatic islet cells derived from deceased donors. Developed by the University of Alberta, this therapy is intended for the treatment of type 1 diabetes mellitus, particularly in patients with brittle or difficult-to-control disease. The procedure involves the laparoscopic transplantation of these islets into a vascularized omental pouch, an alternative to the traditional Edmonton Protocol which utilizes the portal vein for hepatic islet infusion. The omentum is hypothesized to provide a more hospitable environment for islet survival and function due to its high vascularity and potential immune-privileged status. Once engrafted, the transplanted beta cells within the islets sense blood glucose levels and secrete insulin, thereby restoring endogenous glycemic control and potentially achieving insulin independence. Patients undergoing this procedure require a regimen of immunosuppressive medications, such as tacrolimus and mycophenolate mofetil, to prevent allograft rejection.
