Allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a cell therapy developed by the Federal Research Clinical Center of the Federal Medical & Biological Agency (FRCC FMBA) in Russia for the treatment of critical limb ischemia (CLI). These adult stem cells are harvested from healthy donors and administered via intramuscular injection into the ischemic limb. The therapeutic rationale is based on the cells' ability to migrate to sites of injury and secrete a variety of paracrine factors, including angiogenic growth factors and anti-inflammatory cytokines. This secretome promotes the formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis), improves local blood flow, and supports tissue repair in patients who are not candidates for standard surgical or endovascular revascularization.
