Overview

Allogeneic mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are an investigational cell therapy developed by Richard P. Herrmann and colleagues at Cell and Tissue Therapy Western Australia and Royal Perth Hospital. This therapy utilizes third-party, bone marrow-derived MSCs to treat patients with active luminal Crohn's disease who are refractory to conventional biologic therapies such as infliximab or adalimumab. MSCs are characterized by their potent immunomodulatory properties and their ability to evade immune detection, which facilitates their use as an 'off-the-shelf' allogeneic product without the requirement for recipient myeloconditioning. In Phase 2 clinical evaluation, the cells were administered via intravenous infusion at a dose of 2 x 10^6 cells/kg weekly for four weeks, demonstrating significant clinical response and remission rates.
