Overview

Allogeneic pancreatic islet cells (University of Nebraska) refer to an investigational cell therapy for the treatment of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. The therapy involves the isolation of islets of Langerhans from a cadaveric donor pancreas, which is preserved using the Two-Layer preservation method (TLM) to maintain tissue viability via oxygenation with perfluorocarbon. The purified islets are then infused into the recipient's portal vein. Once engrafted in the liver, these cells function as a biological replacement for destroyed beta cells, sensing blood glucose levels and secreting insulin to restore glycemic control. The University of Nebraska Medical Center's protocol specifically utilized a steroid-free immunosuppressive regimen to enhance islet survival and function, aiming to achieve insulin independence and reduce the incidence of severe hypoglycemic events.
