This experimental allogeneic tumor cell vaccine was developed by the Hadassah Medical Organization for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). The vaccine is composed of irradiated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) harvested from donor patients who also have CML. Donors are selected based on HLA matching, specifically requiring the sharing of at least one Class I and one Class II determinant with the recipient. The cells are irradiated to prevent proliferation and then administered intracutaneously. The therapeutic rationale is to stimulate the recipient's immune system to recognize and attack leukemia-associated antigens shared between the donor's cells and the recipient's own malignant cells, effectively inducing a graft-versus-leukemia effect without the risks associated with a full bone marrow transplant.
