Overview

This is an investigational cell therapy consisting of allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from umbilical cord tissue (Wharton's jelly). Developed by the Hospital Infantil Universitario Niño Jesús in Madrid, Spain, it is being evaluated for the treatment of severe COVID-19 pneumonia and associated acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The therapy leverages the immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties of MSCs to attenuate the uncontrolled cytokine cascade and inflammatory response in the lungs, potentially promoting tissue repair and improving respiratory function. The cells are administered via intravenous infusion and are currently being tested in a Phase II clinical trial (NCT04366271).
