This investigational cell therapy, developed by the Institute of Oncology Ljubljana, utilizes allogeneic mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) derived from umbilical cord tissue for the treatment of radiation-induced xerostomia. Targeted at patients with head and neck cancer who have suffered salivary gland damage following radiotherapy, the MSCs are administered via ultrasound-guided injection directly into the parotid or submandibular glands. The therapy aims to restore salivary function by leveraging the MSCs' innate immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and regenerative properties to repair damaged glandular tissue. It is currently being evaluated in a Phase I pilot clinical trial to determine safety and preliminary efficacy in patients who have been disease-free for at least two years post-treatment.
