Overview

This investigational cell therapy consists of allogeneic mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) derived from human umbilical cord tissue. Developed by the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), it is currently being evaluated in the Phase 1 SAMPSON-1 clinical trial (NCT05286255) for the treatment of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 pneumonia or other viral pneumonias. The therapy is administered intravenously and functions through potent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory mechanisms. By secreting various paracrine factors and engaging in direct cell-to-cell interactions, these MSCs aim to mitigate the systemic cytokine storm and local lung inflammation, thereby reducing alveolar damage and improving respiratory function in patients with severe viral infections.
