Allogeneic viable Wharton's jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells are an **off-the-shelf mesenchymal stromal cell therapy** prepared from the Wharton's jelly of donated human umbilical cords for regenerative medicine applications, including development by **Fundacio Institut Guttmann** for **traumatic spinal cord injury**. The product is intended to be administered **intrathecally** in SCI programs and is being explored for its ability to modulate the post-injury inflammatory milieu, secrete trophic and reparative factors, support neuronal and glial survival, and promote tissue sparing and functional recovery rather than acting through a single ligand-receptor target. In the Guttmann program, Wharton's jelly MSCs have been supported by preclinical spinal cord injury work and are being clinically investigated in chronic traumatic SCI, including a pilot study combining intrathecal WJ-MSC administration with transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation.
