Allogeneic Wharton's jelly mesenchymal stromal cells (WJMSC) is an investigational cell therapy being developed by the University of Jordan for the treatment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Derived from the umbilical cord's Wharton's jelly, these mesenchymal stem cells are administered intravenously to leverage their immunomodulatory and neuroprotective properties. The therapy aims to mitigate neuroinflammation and immune system dysfunction, which are key components of ASD pathophysiology. By utilizing paracrine mechanisms and molecular-mediated neuroprotection, the treatment seeks to restore functional neurologic circuitry and improve core symptoms of ASD. It is currently being evaluated in a Phase 1 clinical trial (NCT06293950) to assess safety and efficacy in pediatric patients.
