Overview

Allogenic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are an investigational cell therapy being evaluated for the treatment of acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) in patients with cirrhosis. Developed by a team led by Dr. Pere Ginès at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, this therapy involves the intravenous infusion of MSCs obtained from healthy bone marrow donors. The primary therapeutic hypothesis is that these cells can mitigate the intense systemic inflammatory response characteristic of ACLF through immunomodulatory paracrine signaling, thereby reducing organ failure and improving survival. The 'Liveradvance' trial represents one of the key clinical efforts to validate the safety and efficacy of this approach in a randomized, placebo-controlled setting.
