Allogenic bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) developed by the National Institute of Blood and Marrow Transplant (NIBMT) in Pakistan are an investigational cell therapy for the treatment of steroid-refractory graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). These MSCs are derived from allogenic human bone marrow and ex-vivo expanded using pooled human platelet lysate. MSCs exert their therapeutic effect through potent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties, including the secretion of paracrine factors and direct cell-to-cell interactions that suppress the activation and proliferation of T cells and other immune effectors involved in the pathogenesis of GVHD. This therapy is currently being evaluated in Phase I/II clinical trials to establish safety and efficacy in patients who have failed first-line corticosteroid treatment following haematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
