Allograft particles + rhPDGF is an investigational combination product used for lateral ridge augmentation in patients with deficient alveolar bone ridges prior to dental implant placement. The product consists of mineralized corticocancellous bone allograft particles (freeze-dried bone) that are hydrated with recombinant human platelet-derived growth factor-BB (rhPDGF-BB), also known as becaplermin. rhPDGF-BB is a potent biologic growth factor that stimulates cell proliferation, chemotaxis, and angiogenesis by binding to PDGF receptors (PDGFRA and PDGFRB) on mesenchymal cells, including osteoblasts and periodontal ligament cells. This combination aims to enhance bone regeneration and healing compared to conventional saline-hydrated allografts. It is typically applied in conjunction with a resorbable collagen barrier membrane. The University of Alabama at Birmingham is currently evaluating this combination in a randomized clinical trial.
