alogliptin + metformin (Takeda)

Kazano is a fixed-dose combination product containing alogliptin benzoate, a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor, and metformin hydrochloride, a biguanide, indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Alogliptin works by slowing the inactivation of incretin hormones, such as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), thereby increasing insulin synthesis and release from pancreatic beta cells and reducing glucagon secretion from pancreatic alpha cells. Metformin decreases hepatic glucose production, decreases intestinal absorption of glucose, and improves insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization. The combination was developed by Takeda Pharmaceuticals and received FDA approval in 2013.
