Alpha,beta-methyleneadenosine 5'-triphosphate is a synthetic nucleoside triphosphate analog of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in which the bridging oxygen atom between the α and β phosphate groups is replaced by a methylene group. This modification makes it resistant to enzymatic hydrolysis. It acts as an agonist at P2X purinoceptors, particularly P2X1 and P2X3 subtypes, where it is more potent than ATP itself. It has much lower potency at other P2X (such as P2X2 and P2X4–7) and at P2Y receptors. Persistent activation of these receptors can lead to desensitization, resulting in antagonist-like effects. The compound is widely used in research to study purinergic signaling mechanisms and receptor pharmacology[6][7]. It also weakly inhibits adenylate cyclase activity.
