Overview

Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) + colistin is a combination being studied for the prevention of colistin-induced nephrotoxicity. Colistin (colistimethate sodium) is a last-line antibiotic used against multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacterial infections, but its clinical use is limited by nephrotoxicity. ALA is a potent antioxidant that has shown promise in alleviating colistin-induced kidney damage through its antioxidant and antiapoptotic properties. Studies have demonstrated that ALA pretreatment can reverse the effects of colistin-induced nephrotoxicity by suppressing Nox4 and caspase-3, reducing oxidative stress and renal tubular apoptosis.
