This is a combination therapy consisting of alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) with three chemotherapy agents: cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, and paclitaxel. The chemotherapeutic agents work through different mechanisms to kill cancer cells, while alpha-lipoic acid appears to serve as a protective adjuvant therapy. Cyclophosphamide is an alkylating agent used in cancer chemotherapy and immunosuppression. Doxorubicin binds to DNA-associated enzymes and intercalates between DNA base pairs, causing DNA damage that leads to apoptosis. Paclitaxel is a taxane that interferes with microtubules, stopping mitosis and causing cell death. Alpha-lipoic acid is a potent antioxidant that may help counteract the side effects of chemotherapy, including cardiotoxicity and peripheral neuropathy, without interfering with the anticancer efficacy of the chemotherapeutic agents.
