alpha-lipoic acid + physical therapy is a combination intervention being evaluated for the management of knee osteoarthritis, particularly in overweight women. Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is a potent antioxidant and mitochondrial cofactor that modulates biochemical pathways involved in inflammation and oxidative stress, which are key drivers of cartilage degradation in osteoarthritis. In this therapeutic regimen, ALA (specifically Thioctacid 600 mg/day) is used as a pharmacological adjunct to standard physical therapy (PT), which typically encompasses quadriceps strengthening, flexibility exercises, proprioceptive training, stationary cycling, and aquatic therapy. The combination aims to address both the mechanical and biochemical aspects of knee osteoarthritis to improve pain, joint function, and quality of life by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress while improving joint stability and muscle strength.
