Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) and beta-carotene are fat-soluble antioxidants often combined as dietary supplements. Alpha-tocopherol acts primarily as a chain-breaking antioxidant that protects cell membranes from oxidative damage by scavenging lipid peroxyl radicals. Beta-carotene is a precursor to vitamin A and also functions as an antioxidant, quenching singlet oxygen and neutralizing free radicals. When used together, these compounds exhibit synergistic antioxidant effects in biological membranes, providing greater inhibition of lipid peroxidation than either alone[1]. This combination has been studied for potential roles in cancer prevention and cardiovascular health; however, large clinical trials have shown mixed results regarding efficacy and safety—particularly in smokers or those at high risk for lung cancer[2][3]. The combination is not considered a pharmaceutical drug but rather a dietary supplement.
