Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This is a combination therapy consisting of alpha tocopherol (vitamin E) and memantine. Alpha tocopherol is a fat-soluble antioxidant that protects cell membranes from oxidative damage, while memantine is an N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist that modulates glutamatergic neurotransmission. The combination has been studied primarily for the treatment of mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease, with the hypothesis that their different mechanisms—neuroprotection via antioxidant effects and reduction of excitotoxicity—might provide additive or synergistic benefits. However, clinical trials have shown that the combination does not significantly delay functional decline compared to placebo or either agent alone in this population[2][5][6].
