Overview

Aluminum sulphate + zinc sulphate + benzocaine + chlorhexidine + titanium dioxide is a topical multi-ingredient perianal ointment investigated by the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile (Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile) for the treatment of faecal incontinence in adult women. The formulation combines astringent agents (aluminum sulphate and zinc sulphate), a local anaesthetic (benzocaine), an antiseptic/antimicrobial agent (chlorhexidine), and a physical barrier/protective agent (titanium dioxide). It acts locally on perianal tissue to reduce symptoms of faecal incontinence, potentially by increasing the tone or contraction strength of the anal sphincter. It was evaluated in a completed outpatient clinical trial comparing the ointment versus a placebo base cream over 4 weeks, with efficacy measured by the Wexner Score and Faecal Incontinence Quality of Life scale.
