Overview

Alyostal is a purified aqueous preparation of Hymenoptera venom extracts, including bee venom (*Apis mellifera*) and wasp venoms (*Vespula* and *Polistes*). Developed and manufactured by Stallergenes Greer, it is used for allergen-specific immunotherapy (SIT) in patients with Hymenoptera venom allergy who are at high risk of anaphylaxis or life-threatening systemic reactions. The treatment involves a desensitization protocol, often administered rapidly, which aims to induce immune tolerance by decreasing the responsiveness of mast cells and basophils and modulating T cell polarization. A specific mechanistic study was conducted by the University Hospital of Rouen to evaluate these immune changes using basophil activation tests and flow cytometry during rapid desensitization. Production of Alyostal extracts was discontinued by Stallergenes Greer in April 2018, after being the primary venom immunotherapy option in France for approximately a decade.
