Drug intelligence / Profile preview
AM0802 is a biodegradable, melt-extruded controlled-release implant containing 10.8 mg of goserelin, a synthetic decapeptide analogue of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). Developed by the German specialty pharmaceutical company AMW GmbH, this formulation is designed for the long-term treatment of hormone-dependent malignancies, most notably advanced prostate cancer. The implant is administered subcutaneously and provides a sustained release of the active ingredient over a 12-week (3-month) period. Its mechanism of action involves the potent agonism of GnRH receptors in the pituitary gland; initial stimulation is followed by receptor down-regulation, which suppresses the secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). This suppression leads to a reduction in serum testosterone levels to castrate levels in men, effectively depriving hormone-sensitive tumor cells of the signals required for growth.
