amantadine + levodopa

A combination therapy used primarily for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. This combination therapy has been studied extensively and shows improved efficacy compared to either drug alone in managing Parkinson's symptoms. Amantadine works through multiple mechanisms, including increasing dopamine release in the brain and antagonizing NMDA receptors. L-DOPA (levodopa) is considered the gold standard treatment for Parkinson's disease. When used together with amantadine, the combination has been shown to be more effective than levodopa alone in managing total functional disability, tremor, gait issues, and improving various motor functions. Clinical studies have demonstrated that the combination of levodopa and amantadine is particularly beneficial for treating dyskinesia (involuntary movements) that can occur as a side effect of long-term levodopa use. Amantadine is currently the only available medication specifically approved to treat levodopa-induced dyskinesia. The combination therapy improves grip strength, finger coordination, tracking, tandem gait, and various practical skills used in daily living such as zipping, cutting, and opening doors.
