Overview
Ameluz (BF-200 ALA) is a topical nanoemulsion gel containing 10% aminolevulinic acid (ALA) hydrochloride, developed by Biofrontera. It is approved for the treatment of actinic keratosis and basal cell carcinoma using photodynamic therapy (PDT). The BF-200 nanoemulsion delivery system enhances the penetration of ALA through the stratum corneum. Once absorbed, ALA acts as a prodrug that is converted into protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) within the heme biosynthetic pathway. Upon exposure to light (red light or daylight), PpIX is activated to produce reactive oxygen species, which selectively destroy dysplastic cells.
