Overview

Amikacin liposome inhalation suspension (ALIS), marketed as Arikayce, is a liposomal formulation of the aminoglycoside antibiotic amikacin developed by Insmed. It is specifically indicated for the treatment of refractory nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) lung disease caused by Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC). The drug is administered once daily via the Lamira Nebulizer System, which delivers the liposomal amikacin directly to the site of infection in the lungs. This targeted delivery allows for high local drug concentrations while minimizing systemic exposure and associated side effects such as ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity. ALIS was the first drug to be approved under the FDA's Limited Population Pathway for Antibacterial and Antifungal Drugs (LPAD).
