Amikacin + aztreonam is a combination of two antibiotics used primarily for the treatment of severe infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Amikacin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting protein synthesis and causing bacterial cell death. Aztreonam is a monobactam beta-lactam antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding protein 3 (PBP-3), leading to cell lysis and death. This combination may be used in clinical scenarios where synergistic antibacterial activity is desired or when treating organisms resistant to other therapies[1][3][4]. The use of this combination has been reported in complex infections such as osteomyelitis due to metallo-beta-lactamase-producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa[1].
