Overview

A combination antibiotic therapy consisting of amikacin (an aminoglycoside) and cefoxitin (a cephamycin antibiotic). This combination is primarily used for treating infections caused by resistant bacteria, particularly Mycobacterium abscessus. Amikacin works by binding to bacterial ribosomes and inhibiting protein synthesis, while cefoxitin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis. The combination is often used with a third drug, clarithromycin, as a standard treatment regimen for M. abscessus infections, though studies have shown limited efficacy against macrolide-resistant strains.
