Overview

Amikacin + ceftriaxone is an antibiotic combination therapy that pairs two distinct antimicrobial agents: 1. **Amikacin** - A semi-synthetic aminoglycoside antibiotic derived from kanamycin A that works by binding to bacterial ribosomes and inhibiting protein synthesis. 2. **Ceftriaxone** - A third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins. This combination provides synergistic activity against many gram-negative bacteria, including those with intermediate resistance to either drug alone. The once-daily dosing regimen makes it particularly suitable for outpatient management of conditions like febrile neutropenia. Studies have demonstrated that this combination can be effective against organisms such as Klebsiella pneumoniae with intermediate resistance to both antibiotics individually[5].
