Amikacin + ertapenem is a combination of two antibiotics used together for the treatment of infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. Amikacin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis and resulting in bactericidal activity. Ertapenem is a carbapenem beta-lactam antibiotic that exerts its effect by binding to and inhibiting bacterial penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), thereby interfering with cell wall synthesis and leading to cell lysis and death. The combination has been shown in vitro to have additive or synergistic effects against certain resistant pathogens, including extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae, Acinetobacter species, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa[1]. This combination may be considered for severe or complicated infections where monotherapy may not be effective due to resistance.
