Drug intelligence / Profile preview
amino acids + electrolytes + dextrose is a multi-component parenteral nutrition (PN) solution designed to provide a balanced source of nitrogen, calories, and essential minerals. It is typically administered intravenously to patients who are unable to receive adequate nutrition through oral or enteral routes, such as those with severe gastrointestinal disorders, post-operative complications, or critical illness. The amino acid component serves as a substrate for protein synthesis to maintain or restore lean body mass and treat negative nitrogen balance. Dextrose provides a readily available carbohydrate source for energy, sparing protein from being catabolized for fuel. The inclusion of electrolytes (such as sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, chloride, and phosphate) helps maintain fluid balance, osmotic pressure, and normal metabolic function. Common commercial formulations include Baxter's CLINIMIX E series, which utilizes a dual-chamber bag to keep the amino acids and dextrose separate until administration.
