This tissue-engineered product is an advanced therapy medicinal product (ATMP) developed by the Andalusian Network for Design and Translation of Advanced Therapies. It is designed to treat severe corneal surface disorders, including refractory corneal trophic ulcers and limbal stem cell deficiency. The product is a composite graft consisting of an amniotic membrane scaffold, allogeneic limbal stem cells derived from the sclerocorneal limbus, and allogeneic corneal keratocytes embedded within a biological matrix (typically fibrin-agarose). The limbal stem cells are intended to regenerate the corneal epithelium, while the keratocytes aim to restore the corneal stroma's structural integrity and transparency. This multi-component approach provides both cellular regeneration and a physical scaffold to promote healing in eyes where conventional treatments or standard keratoplasty are not viable.
