Overview

**Amotosalen + UVA pathogen-reduced platelet components** are platelet transfusion components prepared ex vivo using Cerus's INTERCEPT Blood System for Platelets. During processing, the synthetic psoralen **amotosalen** is added to apheresis platelet components and activated by ultraviolet A light, producing irreversible nucleic-acid cross-links that prevent replication of susceptible viruses, bacteria, parasites, and donor leukocytes. The resulting pathogen-reduced platelet components are used for transfusion support in patients with thrombocytopenia, including hematology-oncology and transplant populations, while reducing the risk of transfusion-transmitted infection, including bacterial sepsis, and serving as an alternative to gamma irradiation for prevention of transfusion-associated graft-versus-host disease. The FDA regulates INTERCEPT Blood System for Platelets as a prescription pathogen-reduction device for ex vivo preparation of platelet components.
