This investigational combination therapy is being developed by Mackay Memorial Hospital in Taiwan for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection. The treatment approach involves intraluminal therapy (ILTHPI), where a medicament containing the antibiotics amoxicillin and clarithromycin (sometimes in combination with metronidazole) is applied locally to the gastric mucosa during an endoscopic examination. Amoxicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). Clarithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. This localized, single-dose delivery method is being evaluated in Phase 4 clinical trials as a strategy to improve eradication rates and overcome compliance issues associated with traditional multi-day oral antibiotic regimens.
