Overview

MS-CLAV is a branded generic antibiotic combination consisting of amoxicillin, a semi-synthetic beta-lactam antibiotic, and clavulanate potassium, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Amoxicillin acts by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in the bacterial cell wall, which inhibits the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis, leading to bacterial cell lysis. Clavulanate is a suicide inhibitor that covalently binds to the active site of beta-lactamase enzymes, protecting amoxicillin from hydrolysis and extending its activity against beta-lactamase-producing organisms. Developed and marketed by Calibar Pharmaceuticals, MS-CLAV is available in various formulations including oral tablets (625 mg), dry syrups, and injectable forms (300 mg and 1.2 g). It is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria in the respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin, and soft tissues.
