amoxicillin + clavulanate + clindamycin

amoxicillin + clavulanate + clindamycin is a combination antibiotic regimen used primarily in oral and maxillofacial surgery to prevent or treat severe infections, including Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (MRONJ). This combination provides broad-spectrum coverage by combining a beta-lactam antibiotic (amoxicillin), a beta-lactamase inhibitor (clavulanate), and a lincosamide antibiotic (clindamycin). Amoxicillin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, while clavulanate prevents its degradation by beta-lactamase-producing bacteria. Clindamycin provides additional anaerobic coverage and inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. This specific regimen has been utilized as a standardized prophylactic protocol in clinical studies, such as those conducted by Cliniques universitaires Saint-Luc, to evaluate the efficacy of Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) in reducing the incidence of osteonecrosis in patients receiving bisphosphonate therapy.
