NEODUPLAMOX is a brand name for amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (co-amoxiclav), a widely used fixed-dose combination antibiotic consisting of the broad-spectrum beta-lactam penicillin amoxicillin and the beta-lactamase inhibitor clavulanic acid (as potassium clavulanate). Amoxicillin exerts bactericidal activity by binding to and inhibiting bacterial penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which disrupts peptidoglycan synthesis and cell wall assembly, ultimately leading to bacterial cell lysis. Clavulanic acid acts as a suicide inhibitor of bacterial beta-lactamase enzymes, preventing them from degrading amoxicillin and thereby restoring its efficacy against beta-lactamase-producing resistant strains. NEODUPLAMOX is approved for various bacterial infections, including respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin, soft tissue, and dental infections. It has been evaluated in a Phase 4 clinical trial by the Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria Pisana to determine its efficacy in reducing post-extraction complications in patients undergoing tooth extraction, as well as the utility of co-administered probiotics in mitigating antibiotic-associated gastrointestinal side effects.
