XMOX is a branded generic formulation of co-amoxiclav, a combination antibiotic consisting of the beta-lactam antibiotic amoxicillin and the beta-lactamase inhibitor clavulanic acid (as potassium clavulanate). Distributed in Kenya by Maxim Pharmaceuticals under the NexGen Products brand, XMOX is indicated for the treatment of various bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and skin and soft tissue infections. Amoxicillin exerts its bactericidal activity by binding to and inhibiting penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are essential for bacterial cell wall synthesis. Clavulanic acid acts as a suicide inhibitor of beta-lactamase enzymes, preventing the degradation of amoxicillin and restoring its efficacy against beta-lactamase-producing resistant bacterial strains.
