Obenclav is a combination antibiotic product containing amoxicillin, a penicillin-class beta-lactam antibiotic, and clavulanic acid, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Marketed by Stelon Biotech as a generic commercial formulation, it is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. Amoxicillin works by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which inhibits the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis in bacterial cell walls, leading to cell lysis. Clavulanic acid acts as a suicide inhibitor of beta-lactamase enzymes, which are produced by certain bacteria to degrade beta-lactam antibiotics. By irreversibly binding to these enzymes, clavulanic acid protects amoxicillin from degradation, thereby extending its spectrum of activity to include beta-lactamase-producing resistant strains.
