Overview

amoxicillin + ibuprofen is an oral combination therapy consisting of the beta-lactam antibiotic amoxicillin and the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug ibuprofen, used together to treat bacterial infections while providing analgesic and antipyretic relief. Amoxicillin is a semi-synthetic penicillin that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding penicillin-binding proteins, leading to cell lysis and death in susceptible organisms, and is broadly used for respiratory, ear, sinus, skin, and genitourinary infections. Ibuprofen is a propionic acid derivative NSAID that non-selectively inhibits cyclooxygenase-1 and -2, reducing prostaglandin synthesis to relieve pain, inflammation, and fever without directly affecting amoxicillin’s antibacterial activity. The combination is commonly co-prescribed in outpatient and peri-procedural settings (e.g. dental or ENT infections) to manage both infection and associated symptoms, with attention to overlapping gastrointestinal and, in predisposed patients, renal or cardiovascular adverse effects.
