Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Amoxicillin + metronidazole** is an oral co-administration regimen of two generic small-molecule antibacterial drugs, rather than a single proprietary fixed-dose product. Amoxicillin is a beta-lactam penicillin that irreversibly inhibits bacterial penicillin-binding proteins and thereby disrupts peptidoglycan cell-wall synthesis. Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole prodrug that is reduced preferentially in anaerobic microorganisms to reactive metabolites that damage bacterial DNA. The combination provides complementary aerobic and anaerobic coverage and has been used adjunctively with scaling and root planing for severe, chronic, and aggressive periodontitis, particularly to suppress anaerobic periodontal pathogens.
